What Is Shoulder Dystocia?

Shoulder dystocia is a type of difficult child labor and delivery in which after the delivery of the head occurs, there is difficulty immediately delivering the anterior shoulder of the infant. When this happens, the chin of the infant often presses against the mother's perineum or pelvis, which causes puffiness, swelling or bruising of the infant's face.

What Injuries Result From Shoulder Dystocia?

While the facial injuries usually heal quickly, many of the different types of procedures or manipulations to free the shoulder and deliver the rest of the child can cause severe and permanent damage to the child. One of the most common and critical injuries that may occur from shoulder dystocia is a brachial plexus injury where the nerves to the shoulder, arm and hand are damaged. This may permanently impair feeling and mobility to the child's limb, thus impairing function. This injury is also commonly referred to as Erb's palsy.
