Infant Medication Errors

Heparin Medication Errors Lawyers | Infant Medical Error AttorneysAchieving Verdicts and Settlements for Victims of Medical Malpractice in Miami-Dade, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Broward, Fort Lauderdale, St. Lucie, Martin, and throughout Southern Florida.

Not long ago, actor Dennis Quaid's newborn twins were given an overdose of a prescribed blood thinner. The twins received more than 1000 times the heparin that was prescribed to prevent blood clots from forming in their IVs. While neither sustained long term injury, the medication error turned what should have been a joyous occasion - the birth of twins - into a frightening brush with the consequences of a medical mistake.

Unfortunately, not all families are as lucky as the Quaids were. Each year, children die from accidental heparin overdoses in hospitals across the country. When your family is injured because of an overdose or misdosing of prescribed medication, the Florida medical malpractice lawsuit attorneys of Freidin Dobrinsky Brown & Rosenblum, P.A. are here to help you fight for your rights and stop other families from going through the same heartache. Why Children Are More Vulnerable To Medical Mistakes

There are many reasons that children are more vulnerable to medication mistakes than adults, the first being their sheer physical size. A child's reaction to the wrong drug or the wrong dose of the right drug can be much worse than an adult's. Even a slight increase in dosage beyond what's prescribed can have serious side effects for children, especially premature babies and infants.

Additional reasons that make children more vulnerable to medication errors include:

  • The child's internal development. The liver, kidneys and immune system of children are still developing and unable to flush out improper doses of too much or the wrong kind of medication as an adult would
  • The lack of standardized dosing. Adult medications are often prepacked but children's medication must be dosed individually based on the individual's size and weight, leaving room for error
  • An inability to communicate what is wrong. Children are less able to communicate what they are feeling to nurses, doctors and health care professionals which can create a challenge to proper diagnosis and treatment
  • A variety of forms of medication. Children may receive the same medication in a variety of formats including chewable pills, liquids or drops, increasing the opportunity for human error in dosing

Parents can help reduce the likelihood that your son or daughter will be the victim of a medical mistake by being the eyes and ears of your child. Ask questions, speak up when something doesn't seem right and don't be afraid to ask questions.

In order to combat the serious and potentially fatal side effects of medication errors, many hospitals have instituted barcoding systems and electronic order systems. Barcodes must be scanned on the drug and on the patient's wristband to ensure that the right drug is being given to the right patient. Electronic ordering systems are intended to limit interpretation errors that can come from poor handwriting, incorrect abbreviations or drugs with similar names.

But mistakes still occur, causing harm to many small children throughout the United States. If your son or daughter was injured because he or she received the wrong dose of medication or the wrong medication entirely, the infant medication error attorneys at Freidin Dobrinsky Brown & Rosenblum, P.A. can help.
