Hazardous Toy Recalls

Toy Recall AttorneysOver ten million children's toys, all manufactured in China, have been recalled in the last six months due to lead poisoning, and other paint hazards. These toys run the gamut from well known toys such as various Sesame Street toys made by Fisher-Price (Mattel) to more obscure toys such as Aqua Dots, made by Spin Master. Just because a toy may be more obscure, this doesn't mean that the problem is minimized. The Aqua Dots recall still affected 4.2 million toys sold in the United States.

The accountability and liability for these defective toys is not limited to just one party. Those liable include the Chinese manufacturers who physically make the toys; the Brands such as Mattel, Fisher-Price, Little Tykes, Ohio Art, Today's Kids, and others who design and source the dangerous toys; and the retailers who need to be accountable for the toys that it put on its shelves.

What should consumers do to protect their family from these dangerous toys? First off, parents should use common sense. They should not presume that any toy meets U.S. standards just because it comes from a brand name company. Secondly, you should look at all the toys in the household and research whether those specific toys are included in the recall. As a precautionary measure, you should get rid of any toys that have chipped paint, or cracked vinyl. The biggest risks are in those households with young children where biting and chewing toys is common. Third, if you do have any of the recalled toys in your house, or are worried that your child has been affected by lead poisoning, you can have their pediatrician administer a simple, inexpensive blood test.
