Two young children died recently after getting trapped in previously recalled Simplicity close-sleeper/bedside sleeper bassinets, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recently disclosed. The company's 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets contain metal bars spaced farther apart than federal standards allow. This includes some sold under the Graco brand, some with a Winnie the Pooh motif, as well as other bassinets. These two deaths came after the CPSC originally warned consumers of the Simplicity bassinets back in August 2008, when it reported the deaths of two infants who also became trapped between the metal bars.
The most recent deaths were caused by one infant becoming trapped in the pocket of the fabric, resulting in suffocation, the other infant died as a result of being trapped between the exposed metal bars after the fabric flap was undone. If the Velcro-fastened fabric covering the metal bars of the bassinets is not properly adjusted, it can be dangerous and result in serious injury or death.
If your child or a child of someone you know has been injured, or died as a result of the improper manufacturing of Simplicity bassinets, you may have a possible cause of action.
