Freidin • Dobrinsky attorneys investigating to uncover where she contracted the disease
MIAMI - The lawyers at Freidin • Dobrinsky (http://www.freidindobrinsky.com/) are investigating the death of a client who contracted Legionnaires' disease in mid-September, 2009 and passed away October 10, 2009, approximately three weeks after returning home from a cruise.
The woman, who began feeling ill on September 17, 2009, while aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's "Liberty of the Seas" vessel, was originally suspected of having contracted Swine Flu. Freidin • Dobrinsky's attorneys have contacted and spoken with employees of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention as they work to determine if the disease was contracted on the "Liberty of the Seas" ship or at a different location including the hotels where she stayed prior to the cruise.
In the course of their investigation, reports have surfaced of a Legionnaires' Outbreak at the Epic Hotel in downtown Miami, Florida and it has been reported that another individual, Tore Myhra, who was also a passenger on the "Liberty of the Seas" cruise ship recently caught Legionnaires' Disease and passed away.
Freidin • Dobrinsky is investigating whether there is a link between these two passengers and the disease, whose source has yet to be determined. Legionnaires' disease is contracted by a person breathing in small droplets of water contaminated with Legionella. Because an individual must breathe in small droplets of water to become infected, the disease is not passed on from one person to another.
One of the most common sources of Legionnaires' disease outbreaks is whirlpool spas because of the heat, stasis and aerosolization of water that occurs in a hot tub. It is no secret that many, if not all, cruise ships are equipped with multiple hot tubs. And outbreaks on cruise ships have occurred before. The two other most common sources of the disease are potable water systems and cooling towers.
