On October 12, 2009 officials at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale reported that a nurse may have exposed more than 1,800 patients to blood borne diseases such as HIV, hepatitis C and hepatitis B while they were undergoing chemical stress tests for their hearts. The nurse admitted to reusing IV bags and tubing, from January 2004 to early September of this year, that were supposed to be discarded after every patient.
As of Monday, only 533 of the 1,851 were confirmed to have received letters from the hospital urging them to be tested. Fort Lauderdale police are conducting a criminal investigation of the nurse who admitted she knew it was wrong to reuse the IV equipment.
